In April, 1980, thugs armed with baseball bats and beer bottles attacked Jawala Singh's house in the middle of the night. They broke windows and smashed the windshield and slashed the tires on Jawala's pick-up truck. Jawala is sure the attack came from labour contractors or growers. Asked the next morning why "his own people" would do that, Grewal replied, "Because big fish eat little fish."
